THE GEAR GUIDE

Testers & Safety

An outlet tester can reveal common wiring faults; it cannot prove every aspect of an installation is safe. Pair basic checks with suitable protection and the equipment manual.

What to look for

  • Check for common outlet wiring faults before using a pedestal. A basic tester has important limitations.
  • Use GFCI protection for shock risk; an outlet tester does not provide GFCI protection.
  • Select an alarm listed for the environment and follow its operating-temperature limits.
  • Never use a grill, generator, or fuel-burning heater inside a tent. A CO alarm is not permission to do so.
