THE GEAR GUIDE

Campsite Hookup Adapters

An adapter changes the connection, not the power available. Identify the pedestal outlet and your equipment’s plug before choosing an adapter.

What to look for

  • Common US pedestal outlets include 20 A 5-20, 30 A TT-30, and 50 A 14-50. Identify both ends.
  • An adapter does not increase capacity. Stay within the lowest rating of the circuit, adapter, cord, and equipment.
  • Verify voltage and wiring; a TT-30 RV outlet is 120 V.
  • De-energize the pedestal breaker before connecting or disconnecting, and inspect for heat damage.
